img3Using your attorney or their law clerk to play "detective" is not a good idea.  Being a consumer or business owner, you don't want to exposed yourself to unnecessary liability, a possible law suit or have your case mishandled altogether.  Needless to say, 99% of employees in the legal profession have not been trained as professional investigators, and using them for the investigative portion of your case can get you into trouble!  Using a process server to conduct private investigations can also be a risky decision due to the fact most are NOT state licensed private investigators, even though they sometimes advertise that they can perform investigative services.

A Regulated Profession

Private investigators are licensed in Missouri by the Department of Insurance - Division of Professional Registration, Kansas by the State Attorney General, California by the Department of Consumer Affairs, and are also regulated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission under the provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.  State licensing requires a thorough background investigation by state authorities and the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as mandated continuing education seminars on a regular basis.
